Does anyone thinking about exporting or selling outside of US/Canada?

Hi Dimpledot:

I wrote a post on my blog about exporting.

http://corkynation.com/2008/01/5-tips-to-export-america-is-on-sale....

Last year we started selling in the UK and Ireland. Next year we'll be trying to expand onto the European continent and breaking down some language barriers.

There are a lot of Aussies/New Zealanders on this board and I often wondered if there would be interest for American/Canadian products there.

Very good article (like all of your articles).
I do Russia. Interesting to see what other sellers are up to.

How did you get started in Russia?

I lived there for 19 years, know the market, speak russian language.
In Moscow and St-Petersburg people hungry for western product, I find that it's much more easy to sell to Russia than western world. That's why I'm opening up on-line store mainly for them.
However business model there is different than N. American and retail world is different as well.
If anyone want to know more about Russia let me know, I'll be happy to help.

I saw your coats in Russian internet sores . Congratulations :)
Do you have distributor there?

Corky we actually import our products. There is a lot of interest for overseas brands to come into Australia. Many Australian on-line stores actually do sell many overseas brands. There is a very high interest for products to be imported into the Australian market but it is actually a very hard market to "crack". Quite a few retailers are looking at overseas, going to trade shows to get many ideas. It is a very hard to process though. We would be very interested in having our products distributed overseas as well but that takes a lot of organising and travelling to meet the right people. If anyone knows of anyone that would be interested please let me know.

Hi Dimpledot,

I would be very interested to learn more about sales reps and agencies in Russia.
It would be very good for us to have more contacts there.
Could you give me any advise on where to look?

Thanks.
Judith

My fist advise - start selling internationally and mention (countries) it on your site under "shipping".
Try to get into Russian blogosphere, livejournal in particular. People spend LOTS of time on blogs there and comment very intensive (unlike in N.America). I have my own blog there and I get at least 5-30 comments a day.
Of course you do not know the language, but even so you can post it in english or find someone who can do it for you.
Post it in communities that related to children product, hundreds of people reading them and looking for new stuff from US. Often sales people or people who buy in bulk reading them. In russia you first have to reach on-line stores (that's where wealthy and middle class people are). Once you hit on-line stores there and your brand has some sort of presence you'll move further.

My advise: try to deal with women )sales reps or on-line store owner) who has kids. Why? They are more passionate about kids product, I find they have better knowledge of western brands (only who have access to internet).

Another thing, try to go to a trade show to Europe.
